Stereo to Wave-Field Synthesis music up-mixing: An objective and subjective evaluation

2008

Sound source separation techniques are known to be very useful in many applications. High fidelity and audio oriented applications are a challenging issue in this topic, however, existing algorithms are far from performing with such a high quality. In this paper, a subjective and objective evaluation are carried out for several algorithms designed for dealing with stereo music mixtures. The performance of these algorithms applied to acoustic scene resynthesis in a Wave Field Synthesis system is discussed.

Sensitive nerve function measurement in facial trauma : an observational study

2020

Background Facial trauma is responsible for various types of health damage and may be functional or aesthetic. Depending on the degree of energy released in this type of trauma, sometimes an irreversibility degree is obtained. This study aimed to perform an objective evaluation of traumatic peripheral nerve injuries resulting from mandibular fractures and midface, using silicon monofilaments. Material and Methods This was an observational, cross-sectional study. All patients with maxillofacial fractures, who were hospitalized by the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Instituto Dr. José Frota Hospital, were randomly recruited and screened for inclusion in the present study. Neue Perspektiven der laparoskopischen Simulation: Vom Studententrainingslabor bis zur Stressevaluation

2008

Hierbei konn…

Functional and Clinical Characteristics for Predicting Sarcopenia in Institutionalised Older Adults: Identifying Tools for Clinical Screening

2020

Background: Recently, the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2) has updated the sarcopenia definition based on objective evaluation of muscle strength, mass and physical performance. The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship between sarcopenia and clinical aspects such as functionality, comorbidity, polypharmacy, hospitalisations and falls in order to support sarcopenia screening in institutionalised older adults, as well as to estimate the prevalence of sarcopenia in this population using the EWGSOP2 new algorithm. Methods: A multicentre cross-sectional study was conducted on institutionalised older adults (n = 132, 77.7% female, mean age 82 years). App…

How do adolescents regulate distress according to attachment style? A combined eye-tracking and neurophysiological approach.

2019

According to attachment theory, attachment representations influence emotion regulation (ER) across the lifespan. However, research into attachment-related ER in adolescence is still scarce. The aim of this study was to assess attachment-related ER using a multimodal approach, relying on behavioral and neurophysiological parameters. Attachment styles in eighty-one adolescents were assessed with the Attachment Style Interview (ASI). A distress-then-comfort paradigm based on visual stimuli (the Besancon Affective Picture Set-Adolescents) was employed to "activate" then "deactivate" the attachment system. Gaze and neurophysiological parameters of ER strategies were assessed using eye-tracking …

Developing Engineering Skills in Secondary Students Through STEM Project Based Learning

2020

The development of 21st century skills allows the training of competent students prepared for work and social life. The improvement of these skills, necessary for engineering students and future engineers, can be favored with training in Secondary Education Stage. Specifically, the Project-Based Learning (PBL) methodology includes the performance of different activities that allow the acquisition of both conceptual and procedural skills. This article describes the relationship between the skills that high school students develop when they work with PBL and the competences (ABET engineering skills) they acquire. In addition, an objective evaluation of the learning outcomes of 129 Secondary s…

Assessing the in vitro optical quality of presbyopic solutions based on the axial modulation transfer function.

2016

Purpose To present a metric for assessing the in vitro optical quality of rotationally symmetrical optical elements based on volume calculation under the surface defined by the axial modulation transfer function (MTF). Setting University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain. Design Experimental study. Methods The metric volume under the axial MTF was used to assess the optical quality of 2 rotationally symmetrical multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) within various defocus intervals (0.50 diopter [D], 0.75 D, and 1.00 D) and at various spatial frequency intervals (7.5 cycles per degree [cpd], 15.0 cpd, and 30.0 cpd). Results The far focus of the bifocal IOL yielded higher volume values at all spati…

Determination of thyroid volume in infants with suspected congenital hypothyroidism—the limitations of both subjective and objective evaluation

2020

Objective: To compare two methods of assessing gland size on thyroid ultrasound in newborn infants with suspected congenital hypothyroidism (CH). Methods: Images from infants with eutopic glands referred between 2007 and 2013 were evaluated blind by two sets of observers. Subjective gland size was categorised as small, borderline-small, normal, borderline-large and large. Objective gland volume, calculated as the sum of each lobe using the prolate ellipsoid formula (length x width x depth x π/6), was put into corresponding categories: <0.8, 0.81–1.0, 1.1– <2.2, 2.2–2.4 and >2.4 ml, derived from normative Scottish data. Results: Of 36 infants, permanent CH was present in 17, transie…

Rhinomanometry: point of care test (POCT) for allergic rhinitis in children?

2021

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a global health problem: its prevalence is 23% in Europe, although it is underestimated because as many as 45% of the cases remain undiagnosed. Globally, almost 500 million people suffer from AR, which shows its increasing incidences. The diagnostic course of AR is based on clinical history, supported by anterior rhinoscopy. This inspects the anterior part of the nasal cavity accompanied by allergic sensitivity tests (cutaneous allergic skin tests or specific immunoglobulin E levels). The availability of standardised diagnostic proceduresis able to provide objective evaluations of inflammatory situation, and the degree of nasal obstruction may give an advantage in …

Objective evaluation of the width of source ensemble in virtual halls

2012

[EN] In this work, we study the effects of the width of the sound source in several acoustical virtual room models with different topologies, sizes and uses, calibrated with commercial software. To achieve this aim, a square distribution of sound sources with variable side length has been considered. We have auralized four channels of speech signal and musical signal in three different locations in each room. By using signal processing techniques, a comparison of multisource auralizations with the ones obtained from a single source in the middle of the stage is made. Also, the variations between the usual room parameters obtained from these simulations are analyzed, in order to show the eff…
